Did you know Canada.. I've been reading an amazing book for expectant Mamas and parents of little ones. The book is from DK Canada's Parents' Boutique: CMA Complete Book of Mother and Baby Care.
This book is fantastic for so many reasons..
* It's from the Canadian Medical Association - this is a huge one for me, when I was pregnant with twins I found it very frustrating that I would skip large sections of books. Canadian health care and hospital routines simply do not work like the ones in the States, making many books very unhelpful for us.
* The book is filled to the brim with photos (over 1000 colour photographs and images) - this gives you much more detail and makes you feel more confident you understand the information.
* The book provides helpful information all the way up to age 3. Including tips on stages of pregnancy and delivery, nutrition, self-care, baby care, step-by-step guides to feeding, bathing, diaper changing. Also in this updated edition there is an up-to-date Canadian resource section, first aid section with approved CPR guidelines, a handy growth chart and more to give you the skills and information you need for your little one.
Some of my favourite parts of the book include..
* Step-by-step directions, with photos, on how to make a baby's bottle from formula. This sounds so ridiculous now but when I got home from the hospital with my twins and we had to go with formula for many reasons I had NO CLUE how to make up a bottle and at that time of confusion and stress I did not find the directions on the can very helpful. There's also a perfect section (with photos!!) on cleaning and sterilizing as well - another thing I would have paid any amount of money for when I was on my own and confused about how everything worked.
* A really nice sleeping chart on how much and when children usually sleep from 4 weeks all the way up to 3 years.
* Fantastic medical section, again with photos, for all the crazy things you can run into with a child.
When I was pregnant I bought about 4 or 5 books and was give a few more and I honestly have to say with the CANADIAN information and amazingly helpful photos CMA Complete Book of Mother and Baby Care is head and shoulders above the rest.

One piece of advice I would give to Mom's is that when your baby is teething, you can take a wet facecloth, put it in the freezer for 10 minutes, and give it to your baby to chew on. It works better than teethers. They can really bite on the facecloth and it is not as hard, but the cold is soothing.

ReplyDeletei learned that you can give kids much more tylenol and motrin than it says on the bottle, and rotate them to get more of a benefit. i learned this the hard way after dragging my son into the er with a fever that wouldn't go down at 2 years old, and have used it a few times since.

Make sure that if you are breast feeding, eat at least 500 more calories than you would normally eat. They say that you burn 1 pound a week in just breast feeding alone. Stay away from Garlic but now is your time to indulge in more chocolate!
ReplyDeletestar_light124@hotmail.com
My tip is that when people being discouraging about breastfeeding (esp. mother-in-law), get your hubby to support you and stand on your side. Since as being parents to your baby, you know what's the best for him/her and you should not be discouraged by other people.

Every mom needs to know: When you take prenatal classes, or baby classes, write down the names of all the parents and babies. If you live in a smaller town you will be seeing these same people many times over the years, and eventually it seems too late to ask names!

Every mom needs to know that the umbilical cord does not need to be clamped and cut right away, and that the baby can recieve many health benefits if it is delayed a few minutes, such as not leaving up to half of it's blood supply behind, and leaving it for a few minutes can boost the baby's iron levels, help reduce jaundace, and possibly even cancer. If the baby's not breathing it can even help to resusitate the infant since it's still supplying oxygen as long as it's still attached and pulsating.

This was the best advice ever given to me and I tell all moms to do it.....when you make your bed and your kids' beds make them twice with a mattress protector between the sets of sheets.(Even better if you have a second mattress protector to cover the mattress on the bottom layer) That way if baby gets sick, wets the bed, throws up, etc...all you have to do is strip the first layer of sheets off and crawl back into bed. You don't have to spend time finding sheets and remaking the bed!(Also, works great if you have surprise company that is staying over - really easy to have fresh sheets under the first layer ready to go!)
